13. PALE SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF A LUOHAN
Late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), 17th Century
6” (15.3cm) high

This belongs to a rare group of larger late Ming soapstone sculptures, usually found in much smaller size. Compare with two large and superbly carved figures included by Sydney L. Moss, Between Heaven and Earth, exhibition catalogue, no. 65, of Budai, and no. 66, a luohan of comparable quality. By the Ming Dynasty, the number of luohan who were the disciples of the historic Buddha had increased to eighteen from sixteen.
