Turquoise-inlaid animals in gilt bronze occur more frequently later in the Han period. These are largely in the form of animal supports or weights, often of bears or fabulous chimerae, or leopard or tiger weights such as the pair in this catalogue (no.27).
Phoenix are extremely rare, particularly in free standing form. A rare recumbent phoenix weight suppor ted on a shaped base is illustrated in Kandai no Bijutsu, col. pl. 60. Another gold and silver inlaid phoenix-shaped bronze weight from the Collection of Dr. Paul Singer is illustrated in Exhibition of Art of the Han, 1979, China Institute in America, New York, catalogue, no. 49.
