25. ARCHAISTIC SOFT PASTE PORCELAIN GU BEAKER VASE
|
The archaistic-shaped vessel has a small central section impressed with dense, archaistic kui dragon motifs; the tall spreading foot and the very high, widely flaring neck are both decorated with archaistic plantain leaves in upright and pendent formation. The soft paste porcelain body displays a very lightly undulating texture under a slightly crazed glaze of delicate egg-shell white tone. Soft paste porcelain vessels of this shape are very rare. A plain turquoise-glazed gu vase dated to the Kangxi period with a more elongated central section but essentially the same construction and proportions of the upper and lower halves is illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Palace Museum, Beijing, col. pl. 141. A pair of very similarly decorated Qianlong period turquoise vases in the Percival David Foundation, was included in the exhibition, For the Imperial Court: Qing Porcelain from the Percival David Foundation, New York, 1997, catalogue no. 35. |
