28. RARE GILT-SPLASHED ZHI-SHAPED VASE
Kangxi Period (1662-1722)
5 1/4" (13.2cm.) high

Published: Gerald Hawthorn Ltd., London, Oriental Works of Art, June 2001, catalogue no. 23.

Cast in the pear-shaped form of an archaic bronze wine vessel, the sides and footring are covered with irregular-shaped gold splashes.

Another rare Kangxi-marked gilt-splashed vase of similar shape but with linear rather than random splashes, is published in China’s Renaissance in Bronze, no. 34. The zhi-shaped vase was much favoured particularly in porcelain during the Kangxi reign. A claire-de-lune vase of this form with added handles is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Monochrome Porcelain, no. 89, p. 96. A large carved celadon vase is published by Walter Bondy, Kang-Hsi, Munich, 1923, p. 201.
